Are You Drinking Enough?

What is something that is good for your skin, great for weight loss, has amazing overall health benefits and is absolutely free?

WATER!

The importance of drinking water for your health and well being is a top notch priority in my book! If you’re looking to start your health journey I personally think we need to start with water!

But why?

Water

Aids In Weight Loss

Drinking water ideally 30 mins before a meal will help you not to consume so much food in one sitting, sometimes we mistake hunger for dehydration. Drinking 30 mins before a meal will help you gauge this.

Increases Energy

Water can help aid with energy and release the feeling of fatigue! Instead of reaching for that morning coffee as soon as you wake up try a big glass of water maybe pop some lemon or cucumber for flavor. Be mindful that you have just slept hopefully at least 7 hours the night before,so  do you really need a “pick me up” with coffee OR are you perhaps feeling dehydrated from not drinking for 7 hours while your body was at work to repair itself.

Better Skin

Water helps to flush out the toxins in our body that we have due to the food we eat, cosmetics, environment and other things. One way to help promote clear skin and beat the signs of premature aging is making sure we drink enough water! When toxins linger in our body they can make us very sick and for some people this can come out as acne, other skin irritations and inflammation.

Flushes Out Toxins

Water helps to gets rid of waste through sweat and urination which reduces the risk of kidney stones and UTI’s (urinary tract infections), and promotes the body to perform better overall.

Curves Cravings

Are you a night time picker? Or have a sweet tooth right after you eat something savory or healthy, just to finish it off? If you keep your water bottle with you, you’re more likely to sip away on that than to reach for something sweet. If we do this out of habit, let us drink water instead of treats and soon enough you wont even realizing you’re doing so!

Above are my top 5 reasons why you should drink more water, there are many others too!

Overall if we are drinking enough water the body can function better overall, and therefore we feel a lot better, happier and healthier. Our bodies have the potential to work at 100% if we are hydrated. We are much healthier when we are more mindful about the importance of water on our life.

So how much should we really drink?

There are many opinions on how much to drink. I have heard 8 “glasses”, 4 litres, etc. Which one is right? I personally drink about 2-3 L a day. Anything less than that and I start to feel the horrid effects of dehydration. In saying that I do go to the gym and walk most days so on those days I usually drink more than if I was not doing anything active.

I don’t think there is a right amount for every person and their lifestyle, but I do think we have to be mindful of making sure we do drink water. Do you ever just forget to drink? I know I do if I don't actively think about having my water bottle with me! Let us be mindful of that and you are already half way there!

If you’re not a big water drinker but would like to start here are some tips for a easier transition.

  1. Start your morning with a big glass of lemon water. This can wake up your body and get everything moving along nicely. Remember you have just spent at least 7 hours with no water while your body has been hard at work repairing itself. Time to re-hydrate!
  2. Swap one of your coffee’s for a herbal tea. You can select a herbal tea to help you along with any health benefits you may be needing at the time. By just doing this one time a day if you’re a big coffee drinker you will feel the effects pretty fast and soon enough you won’t be missing your coffee!
  3. Taking a bottle of water wherever you go! - Having one with mls on the side of the bottle is a good idea! You can make it a goal to get to the next mark whether that being 750ml or 1.5 L
  4. When out for dinner, have water on the table. Most of us drink the water while waiting for our food without even knowing we are! Saves you money, promotes your health and if you’re on a weight loss journey – it can help assist in filling you up, meaning that you consume less calories. So there’s my 4 easy tips that you can start with today. Hopefully very soon you will start to feel and see the benefits of being mindful of how much water you are really drinking!
