I have been hairdressing for about 10 years now. It’s my passion (and still is), but in 2016 my health took a turn for the worst. I suffered severe asthma and other allergies that were brought on quite fast. My hands were dry and sore but the worst thing of all was that I could feel my air ways start to close up every time I coloured someone’s hair – and 80% of my clients were coloured clients!
I have a very supportive workplace and boss, and we worked together to make the best situation from that. In the meantime I was constantly at my local doctors – inhaler after inhaler, a ton of steroids, courses of antibiotics, and steroid creams that came and went. This went on for months and I think I would of been at the doctor every 3 weeks. As you can imagine, that is a lot of money spent over the last year!
The result was always the same though. More drugs. Leave work. Don’t go out after 4pm because of the chill in the air affected my breathing so much. Asthma and allergies don’t sound like too much of a big deal, but over time it was crippling. My life was ruled around what I couldn’t do. It was a constant battle. I had to ask my friends not to wear perfume around me, I had to time my exercise around the weather, cut my full time working week and my passion down to part time/casual basis and find other work. I had to stop using chemical cleaning at home, cut this out, add this, take this drug in the morning, use my puffer morning and night and then my Ventalin when I couldn’t breathe, then more drugs at night. Every time I had taken my course of steroids I would find myself the next week sick from a cold (and I’m never really one to catch colds), and then the cycle would start again. Another dose of steroids please! And be sure to add in some more antibiotics!
I would get extremely sick, which affected my asthma and then other allergies I had developed over the cycle of the constant sickness, and the struggle kept going and going. As you could imagine, I went from nothing to EVERYTHING being stripped away from me – my job, my passion, my lifestyle, my health and even friendships as everything involved around what I could and couldn’t do, depending whether I could breathe that day or not.
Now some may say that I should’ve expressed this with my doctor – and of course I did – it affected my entire life! I was lucky enough to have people around me that understood, and were supportive.
How easy would it be to fall into a depression? And that would most likely have resulted in more drugs.
But the thing is, he did his job. He treated my symptoms, he providing me with medical care, I had other testing that came back in the “normal ranges”. And, I was provided with the medication that he saw fit for my troubles. So he did a good job. He did a doctor’s job and there is nothing wrong with that. I am grateful to have the medicine and care, though I was still suffering physically, mentally and financially.I was also concerned about my health long term, and how this was going to affect our chances of having a baby as we were already on struggle street. When we did finally conceive, how was I going to cope without all these drugs to keep me going? Some big changes had to be made!
It wasn’t until later – months after changing my life to accommodate for my sickness – that I heard about Dr Wellness. A lovely lady contacted me and suggested that I should have a look at some of her work as she follows Create.Eat.Nourish, and thought I would be interested in what she does. So I did, and I’m so glad I did. What I found was amazing…And someone that could really help me with my health, physically, mentally and overall financially – someone that valued the holistic approach, but was also a medically trained doctor, and someone that would spend more than 5 mins at one time and really look into the way I was suffering. She looked into the “why’s” and “how’s”, and what we could change for better overall health, and not just masking the symptoms I was displaying at the 5 minute consultation I had at the GP’s.
I booked in for a consultation with Tracy and I was welcomed with love, care and the utmost professionalism. I could really see that she not only loved her job that she was generally interested in helping me on a deeper level. Our first consultation went for 60 minutes. YES, you heard right… I sat with a trained medical professional for 60 minutes to go over my health.
She not only asked me about my current health but she also dug deeper into the past as my condition was only brought on in the last year. She asked about me physically but also mentally we talked about my sleeping patterns, stress levels, home environment, diet and even my health as a child. All these things could have a great impact on my health today, but it’s something I never thought of or considered, and certainly something my current doctor would ever ask about. As we dug deeper I found myself realizing a lot of things that could of impacted my current health today and it really did get me thinking that we really need to start valuing those little niggling concerns we have, and to not keep ignoring them.
The other thing I realised is to trust your gut – even when your doctor says that you’re OK.
After chatting with Tracy about my situation she sent me home with a intensive questionnaire. To grasp how involved this questionnaire was – it took me 2 hours to fill out, and along with a series of blood tests, Dr Wellness was able to build my portfolio so she could really get into the nitty gritty of my health and how I can move forward – mind, body, and soul.
A few weeks after I sent in my questionnaire and when she recieved my blood test results, I booked in another consultation with her to see what my results were, and what they meant for me and our action plan!
Again, I was greeted with love, care and understanding – not only from her but also her staff. It was the most relaxing experience I have ever had while dealing with some pretty serious issues. As I walked into the room, Tracy asked how I was. She instantly put me at ease and I felt like I was talking with a close friend. I saw that she had pages of notes, recommendations and even a timeline of eventful moments of my life going right back till I could remember. All this was taken into consideration for our future plan.
She explain what the bloods were for and what they meant, and the importance of not just accepting the “normal range” as fate. We want to be the best we can be, so that we can live life with purpose and not just be on a low end of “normal” one point away of not being OK.
She also let me know that she doesn’t expect me to follow everything that she has planned for me. She said herself that she is a realist, and if I can do one small thing for my health at a time then she would be happy with that. Not all of us can get a full 8 hours sleep or have time to make amazing dinners every night. If we can just work on one small thing at a time they will eventually be a collection of small things which will ultimately lead into a lifestyle change for a better, happy and healthier version of the me I want to become.
What I loved about this experience was not only did we get to the heart of what I needed to work on (the physical health side) but it also covered my emotional health and gave me the tools to carry on for not only for the week but for the year ahead. I even received a personalized wellness book that included her suggestions, a food plan, recipes and ongoing education for me to refer to at home.
I felt completely supported by Tracy and her team. Even as I left, I couldn’t wait to book in my follow up visit and show her how much I had improved, and I look forward to visiting her again if I need to be supported in other areas.
I only wished I had known about Dr Wellness before I gave up one of my passions. How many tears it would have saved! (and also dollars).
Now that I have more of an idea of what needs to change I can go on with confidence that I have the knowledge from a medical professional that fits within my values of a holistic approach. I don’t think you could get a better combination than that!
